In Brazil we are taught Jesus Christ is white
Dear
friends!
My name is Adelson
Adewale de Brito, also known as Mawo Adelson. I am a priest of the
Afrodiasporic religion called Jeje Savalou.
I mean, I'm a
priest of the Voodoo Cult.
I am very happy
and honored to address all of you, my Pan-African brothers and sisters through
this blog that we have decided to call "Pan-Africanism and Affirmative
Politics", to talk about themes that are dear to our Afrodiasporic
history, which was made invisible to all of us due to the perverse exercise of an Eurocentric
hegemony imposed on us by the economic and politic power of the elites during
the 522 years of history of this country.
In the original
blog we used here the French language as a pan-African language of
communication because this language has become a kind of LINGUA FRANCA for all
of Afro-Diasporic Africa, that is to say, among the black peoples of Africa and
the black peoples spread all over the world.
First of all, it
is obligatory to greet Leba, before tackling the subject which brings us here
today. And for that, we are going to use the Fon language, that is to say that
we are going to pronounce Fongbe, one of the official languages of the Republic
of Benin, and which was spoken by our ancestors, to greet Leba.

As we are taught
in elementary schools, Brazil was "discovered" by the Portuguese on
April 22, 1500, and a first mass was held on April 26 of the same year, celebrated
by Father Henrique of Coimbra, that is to say, that was the beginning of our
Catholic catechesis. So what does this historic record mean? This means that
for 522 years, Brazil has taught us to love and respect a Jesus Christ who is
white and has a European face. Well, through studies of history, archaeology,
theology, etc., what Jesus looked like has been openly debated. It is clear
that the New Testament gives no description of the physical appearance of
Jesus.
A modern question
raises an honest debate on the subject: if Jesus was born in Bethlehem, in
Judea (current West Bank), among the Eastern peoples who spoke Aramaic, a
language spoken today mainly in Syria, how could he had Europeans features and
straight hair?
Thus, the
contradiction between physical geography and the figure of a Jesus Christ with
white skin and blue eyes is flagrant.
It is timely to
point out that this debate is already in full swing among the authorities of
the Catholic Church itself and its affiliates all over.
As the Archbishop
of Canterbury, Justin Welby, for example, said, "The way the Western
Church portrays Jesus needs to be reviewed." In an interview with the BBC
(in English), in June 2020, the Archbishop of Canterbury and head of the
Anglican Church positioned himself in favor of a reflection on the
representation of Christ as a white man. In a context of demonstrations against
racism around the world, Justin Welby recalled that the representation of
Christ depends on the country. “You see Jesus represented in as many ways as
there are cultures, languages or understandings,” he noted.
